North Mankato, MN—The Aussie Peppers of Minnesota opened up their 2019 NPF season at home against the Beijing Shougang Eagles Sunday night.
The Eagles (1-6) recorded their first win of the season, 3-2, over the Peppers (0-1).
Angel Bunner starred in the circle for the Eagles. She tossed a complete game, striking out nine and only allowing two earned runs.
The Eagles started off the scoring in the first inning as Yang Huiqi recorded an RBI single to score Victoria Draper.
The Eagles added to their lead in the third inning as Kendall Veach hit her first home run of the 2019 season to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Peppers answered with a couple runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Tahli Moore started the inning off with a triple before a Carmelle Sorensen cut the deficit in half.
Janice Blackman came in to run for Sorenson and scored later on a double from Maddie Cameron to tie the game up at two.
In the seventh, Eagles take a 3-2 lead after an error by the Peppers’ shortstop, Tamieka Whitefield.
Bunner stranded the tying run at third with a groundout to end the game.
Nicole Ries pitched four innings for the Peppers. Ries gave up two earned runs, and struck out five.
Nicole Newman came on in relief, and tossed three innings. Newman struck out seven and only gave up one hit.
The Peppers host the Eagles for game two of the series, Monday night at 7:05 CT.
